Grays is the largest town in the borough and unitary authority of Thurrock in Essex and one of Thurrock's traditional parishes. Officials say the scammers identify themselves as a member of local law enforcement, even using the names of real detectives, and demand payment in the form of gift cards to avoid being arrested on a warrant.
